Veritas Jointer Blade Sharpener

A commercial sharpening service or a sophisticated home grinder is necessary for badly nicked blades. The Veritas jointer blade sharpener is designed to restore blades dulled from normal use, even if they contain minor nicks. It clamps blades up to 8" wide (including hand-plane blades) for sharpening on PSA-backed abrasives. Just stick the abrasive to a flat surface (plate glass works well), adjust the elevating screw until the bevel is flat on the abrasive, and use it as you would any other honing guide. After basic sharpening, switch to a fine abrasive, and hone a fine micro-bevel. Two position stops ensure that successive blades are honed identically. It is both easy and effective, letting you quickly restore blades that you would probably let become far duller before sending out for service. Made of cast aluminum with brass and steel fittings. Veritas Large Spokeshave Kit

Traditional wooden spokeshaves are still popular tools, despite modern alternatives that offer better control over depth of cut. Typical spokeshave blades have tangs that wedge into holes in the tool body. Cut depth is adjusted by tapping the tang ends or the base of the blade. Many users find ways to refine this haphazard process, but most require a screwdriver or other tool, or the blade must be removed to make even a small adjustment. With this kit (and basic woodworking skills) you can build a tool with a simple, effective depth adjustment that requires no blade removal or tools. We offer two sizes. The large is a good general purpose tool. The small is for general tasks on a slightly smaller scale, allowing fine control on detail work (e.g. small chamfers). Kits include an A2 steel blade, a brass wear strip, two brass lock nuts and adjustment thumb wheels, a tap, and instructions. The large blade is 2 3/4" 1/8" thick (4" 11/16" overall); the small blade is 1 7/8" 3/32" thick (2 3/4" 1/2" overall). At about 1/3 the scale of the full-size tool, the miniature cabinet scraper measures 3 13/16" wide overall and weighs about 1 1/2 oz. Its small size allows fine control when smoothing surfaces. The 15/16" wide blade, made of spring steel and ground at a 45 angle, is held at a consistent depth and angle. A thumbscrew lets you camber the blade to prevent blade corners from leaving ridges in the work. The handle position lets you apply force directly in line with the cutting edge. Veritas Scraper Burnisher

This tool turns scrapers into cutting tools. Turners who are used to using scrapers with a grinder burr will be amazed at the difference a smooth edge-hook can make. After grinding a scraper, you just deburr the flat face and roll a hook onto the edge. The pressure you use determines the size of the hook. Two 1" long carbide burnishing rods are supplied. One is ground at 10 for burnishing scrapers with bevels of 70 or 75, and the other is ground at 5 to burnish 75 to 80 bevel angles. Since the burnisher (clamped in a vise or screwed to a lathe stand) lets you use your entire body for leverage, you can even put hooks on HSS scrapers, something not possible with any other burnisher. The light, strong, glass-filled nylon body, with all-brass fittings, is kind to a sharp hook. You can slip any thickness of scraper (6"/150mm long) into it, clamp it in position, and set the amount of bow with the screw-actuated center pad. The body is molded to fit your hands comfortably.
